Fire Dept. Fun Facts

Initially firemen passed buckets of water to be thrown on a fire.  “Throwing water” remained a common term even after the introduction of fire hose.  Many cities, in an effort to motivate quick response, rewarded the first company to get water on a fire, resulting in fights among the companies.

Arkansas Gazette August 12, 1871:

Last night, about ten o’clock, quite a number of firemen became engaged in a quarrel about who threw the first water which resulted in a general fight, resulting in several knockdowns, broken noses and bruised faces.
